Day 5: Medical Camp (6th Dec, 2020)

Medical team of Medical Service Centre led by Dr Anshuman Mitra secretary MSc incharge disaster medical response cell and Dr Mridul Sarkar, member Central committee MSC started the medical camp on 2/12/2020. It was formally inaugurated by peasant leader sardar Sadbir Singhji, Punjab state secretary Kirti Kisan union, AIKMS, Shri Dilbar Singh gill Kisan majdoor Sangharsh committee,Punjab, Shri Satyawanji national president All India Kisan khet majdoor sangathan (AIKKMS) and member steering committee All India Kisan struggle coordination committee, Pratap samal member, veteran social activist on the morning of 3rd December.

As the most vibrant camp on site having senior doctors with long experience in helping in disasters, mass movements and gatherings, this camp has been embraced by all as the most useful component of the farmers protest at Singhur border, Delhi Karnal Highway and become a rallying point for health care professionals and health loving people coming in support of the glorious moment of the people of India. Mounting the barriers and enforcements following failure of talks with farmer leaders due to empty promises by Central agricultural minister, is matched by further rallying by protesting farmers of Northern States promises.

The activities: Basecamp and mobile medical camps
Doctors, nurses, paramedical volunteers of MSc from West Bengal, Delhi, Haryana ,Tripura, Madhya Pradesh and Uttarakhand conducted free medical camps at base camp, examining ailing protesting farmers and dispensing medicines contributed by citizens across the country in support of peasant movement. They are also conducting mobile medical camps among aged and ailing people staying in tents up to 4 kilometres of 15 kilometres camping region.

Health issues at the Singhur border:
Exposure to atmosphere in this winter season is causing allergies, upper respiratory tract infections, eye and skin infections and exacerbations of existing conditions like hypertension and diabetes among the farmers. Basic civic amenities including food, staying, water, cleaning and scavenging have been done voluntarily by the farmers, well-meaning citizens, gurudwaras, social organisations. This is a very commendable collective work which anyone coming to the movement site is heartily appreciating. The role of Central and state government which have public departments to support the gathering, is this dismally minimal. Shortage of civic amenities and water supply is being felt in the last two days.

The health problems - Role of the government
The farmers facing grave injustice cannot relent. We appeal the centre that health crisis in the form of vector borne, feco-oral and other infections can be avoided only by resolving the impasse by the centre amicably a propeople manner without any rashness, by withdrawing all three anti-people policies.
